My sister in law and I made this cake for Dave's sisters wedding. We used a cake recipe that uses the base of a cake mix, and to which you add sour cream, cake flour, sugar, eggs, and vanilla- that's it- no butter, oil or shortening. We made 2-14", 12", 10", and 6" inch round cakes, we did devils food cake and made cookies in cream filling for all the layers. It was a lot of work, and supplies! After we baked the cakes and filled them, we made marshmallow fondant and dyed it ivory, and rolled it out over the 2 stacked cakes. That part was tricky and a little scary, but we smoothed out most imperfections. Next was the stacking, in which we had to use wooden dowels for support! After it was all stacked we decided it needed more, and I busted out some hidden piping skills and piped random stuff, and it actually turned out! We read online somewhere that wedding cakes look best if the tiers are spaced out by 4 inches, so we only stacked the 14, 10 and 6 inch cakes and just decorated the random 12" cake and displayed it just in case they needed to serve that one too. Her colors were plum and chartreuse, so we accented the cake with those colors! And that my fellow bakers and chefs is how I did my first wedding cake! Let's just say she wanted us to do it to save money, but it still cost over $100 in ingredients and supplies! It was in the end tons of fun to do though!
